Elizabeth Fiend is a gonzo community educator, activist and media maker. She’s appeared on NBC’s The Today Show, The X-Games Tube Fest, and The Food Network. Elizabeth is an educator, writer, filmmaker, artist, musician, labor union steward and executive board member, wedding officiant, celebrity judge, event host, motivational speaker, gourmet cook, nutritionist, recipe developer, gardener, photographer, food stylist, author. Her vegan recipe The Philly Cheese Fake appears in the book Lonely Planet Travel Guide to Philadelphia & the Pennsylvania Dutch Country. She’s an anarchist, punk rocker and Mummer.

Elizabeth received the School Award Medal for Youth from the American Legion when she was 12 years old. Those who receive the medal must exemplify qualities that define character: courage, honor, leadership, patriotism, scholarship and service. She holds to those qualities today.

Elizabeth’s goal is to promote a sustainable living trinity – good health, environmentalism and community activism, a practical, rewarding lifestyle where ones actions won’t have a negative effect on future generations.

She currently specializes in film making, writing and motivational speaking and aspires to be an agent of social change who uses artistic expression combined with extensive research and reliable information to improve the health of individuals, the community and the planet. Currently she conceives, writes, produces and hosts how-to videos that encourage people to use their own imagination, skill and energy to advance not only their lives but the community around them and ultimately the planet.

Elizabeth is the creator, producer, writer and host of 28 educational videos and mini-documentaries. Her work usually appears under the banner “SLAW.me” an independent film company she founded, in 1998, along with two other women.

Elizabeth has appeared on NBC’s The Today Show and on the Food Network as a guest on weatherman Al Roker’s cooking show On the Road With Roker. Her work is broadcast nationally on Free Speech TV through the DISH Network satellite TV; in NYC on the Manhattan Neighborhood Network;  in Philadelphia her videos/mini-documentaries appear on public television WYBE, Drexel University’s educational access station DUTV and PCAM Philadelphia’s Public Access channel.

Her latest two videos were created specifically for use in the classroom. Elizabeth’s videos have been screenings in dozens of venues and events including ESPN’s Tube Action Sports Festival in conjunction with the X Games; Vancouver Film Festival; and at the Institute of Contemporary Art. Elizabeth is the co-author of a reference book on the thematical analysis of TV Index to the Annenberg Television Script Archive. She has written articles for the green magazine Grow, and Drexel University Press’s Crosscurrents, among others. Her illustrations have appeared in Al Goldstein’s Screw Magazine and in Robert Crumb’s comic anthology Weirdo. There is a chapter dedicated to her cartoons in Oddballs (Showcase Comic Series #3), Thunder Bass Press. Elizabeth has written over 40 articles for the Junk Science Column –separating the junk from the science-  on the blog Phawker.com.

Elizabeth has been featured in the Lonely Planet Travel Guide to Philadelphia; The Great Cheese Steak Book; National Geographic Traveler’s Magazine; The New York Times; The Philadelphia Inquirer; The Chicago Tribune, among others. For 15 years Elizabeth was the slide guitar player in the psychedelic punk band More Fiends. Having toured America and Europe extensively and recorded 2 albums and 6 singles, plus a Peel Session recording for the BBC Radio in England.

Elizabeth has been hired by May’s Department Stores, Strawbridges, and Whole Foods Supermarket to conduct a series of lectures / workshops offering nutritional advice and to demonstrate the preparation of her original recipes. One series was designed to promote healthy eating for young children. She has been the Master of Ceremonies at Scribe Video’s Fashion Show for Teens; she was a panelist at the annual dinner and fundraiser for the charity Women in Transition; and did an invitational reading for Banned Book Week at the Free Library of Philadelphia. She has been a judge at the Super Mecca Karaoke Gong Show and a Rat Art Contest. Elizabeth is a wedding officiant and has achieved her dream of marrying a couple while she was wearing a clown suit.

Elizabeth is also the Bibliographic Specialist at a prestigious university library.  And has served on the advisory board of the Mural Arts Program (MAP) Journeys South Project.

Labor Union Activist:
Elizabeth is a steward for Local 590 AFL-CIO and a member of their executive board. She is on the Web Committee for District Council 47. Elizabeth recently completed the 36th Annual Northeast Regional Summer School for Union Women at Rutgers University, a residential program, sponsored by the United Association of Labor Education (UALE). The school brings together union women to strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the American labor movement in an effort to develop skills that will prepare them to be active union leaders.  Elizabeth is a member of CLUW, The Coalition of Labor Union Women which supports the rights of working women and families.
